Pink Story 🩷
Lake Retba, also known as Lac Rose, reaches up to 40% salinity, making it the second saltiest lake in the world, second only to the Dead Sea.
It is located 35 km northwest of Dakar, the capital of Senegal. It covers only 3 km² and is separated from the Atlantic Ocean only by a narrow strip of dunes.
Its natural beauty and the traditional salt-mining culture surrounding it have earned it a place on UNESCO's Tentative List for future designation as a World Heritage Site.
Lake Retba also has a history with sports. It was the finish line for the Dakar Rally before the race moved to South America in 2009.
Color Has an Explanation ☀️
Like everything else in life, the color of Lake Retba's water also has an explanation. The pink hue is due to a microalga called Dunaliella salina. In extremely salty water, this alga produces a reddish pigment (beta-carotene) to protect itself from intense sunlight.
The higher the salt concentration, the more intense the pink color. However, it can vary between fuchsia, orange, or violet. It all depends on the sunlight and the time of day.
The lake's color is much pinker during the dry season, from November to June. The most vivid color peaks usually occur between January and March.
It's important to emphasize that Lake Retba doesn't remain pink 365 days a year.

It's also important to remember that a flood in 2022 completely washed away the lake's characteristic color and interrupted the salt harvest. Since then, Lac Rose has never been the same. The colors of the lake change every year and even from one day to the next.

The lake becomes truly special when you understand the importance of the connection between the natural phenomenon that colors its water and the local economy.
The salt from this lake is harvested by hand, a practice that has been followed for generations. It is also one of Senegal's main sources of table salt and a major export.
To Do List 🧂
Visiting Lac Rose is synonymous with immersing yourself in the region's culture.
Among the things to do are:
Watch the salt harvest. Local men and women are harvesting salt on the lake's shores using traditional tools.
Take a dip in the lake. Yes, you can go in the lake. Due to its high salinity, you'll float effortlessly. It's recommended not to stay in the water too long and to shower with fresh water immediately afterward.
Activities in the dunes. Quad biking and 4x4 rides.
Local markets. Near the lake, there are markets where you can find processed salt ready to buy.
Canoe trips. Perhaps the most traditional activity of all is to hop in a wooden canoe and take a ride with a local. They usually take you to places where the water has regained its pink hue.

The experience of visiting Lake Retba has changed since the flooding in 2022. Although the lake itself remains the same, its colors were lost and are only slowly returning.
Locals warn that this event was a consequence of climate change and that this place has been forever altered. They still don't know when the Lac Rose will return to its vibrant pink hue.
Best Time To Go 🌦️
The best time to see the lake's pink hue is during the high season, or dry season, which runs from November to June. The low season is during the rainy season, from July to October.
To see a more vivid, intense pink, it's recommended to visit the lake from January to March, when the sun is strongest, and the weather is driest.
